Join Us for the 2007-2008 Silver Anniversary Season
The 2007-08 season marks a milestone in the history of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra – it is our 25th birthday!! And what a glorious 25 years it has been, started all those years ago by a small group of dedicated Westfielders who believed that the expression of history and culture through the live performance of symphonic music significantly enhances the quality of community life.
We have come a long way since then, growing to be New Jersey’s second largest professional orchestra, and having a presence in the regional cultural communities of New Jersey and as far afield as Carnegie Hall.
The 2007-08 season also has a secondary, more contemplative retrospective; one of sharing Music Literature’s examples of creative genius that reflect the impact of war, the values of conflict resolution, and the championing of universal ideas of good.
Whether it be Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Britten’s War Requiem, or Strauss’s Duet - Concertino for Clarinet and Bassoon, many pieces this season either reflect a protest against violence, a protest for justice, or a yearning for peaceful simplicity. There could not be a better time to make such a cultural and universal statement.
WSO’s commitment and leadership in the promotion and performance of new music by New Jersey composers will also continue with the world premiere of Matthew Halper’s The Tempest, a story of forgiveness and wisdom in the face of complexity, a tale of war and ultimate peace.
The WSO Silver Anniversary season will come to a triumphant close with an unparalleled expression of the horror of destruction and a plea for reconciliation with a spectacular presentation of Britten's magnificent War Requiem – the first in New Jersey for over 20 years.
Join us, then, both for a birthday bash and a musical reflection on peace and universal good with performances that are beautiful and enthralling. Expect other WSO features at PNC Arts Center and beyond, and join us for our now famous New Year’s Eve festival of Broadway Classics – one of Westfield’s most popular holiday traditions.
There is something for everyone at Westfield Symphony. Subscribe today to celebrate, to contemplate, and to be part of WSO’s spectacular Silver Anniversary season!

Temple Emanu-El and Westfield Symphony Orchestra to celebrate 60th Anniversary of Israel
WESTFIELD, NJ (March 11 )— On Thursday May 8th at 7:30PM Temple Emanu-El and the Westfield Symphony Orchestra will present a unique collaboration Israel at 60 – A Diamond Celebration, a groundbreaking cultural festivity featuring outstanding music, rousing performances and original pieces to mark the birth of the modern State of Israel, to honor Israel’s values, ideals, and worldwide contributions and to hope for future peace.
Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Temple Emanu-El Israel fund.
Recognizing the unique Israeli and Jewish Diaspora cultural identities, the celebration is also a community building effort promoting the values of tolerance, diversity and reconciliation, uniting constituencies, and fostering coordination and cooperation between synagogues, federations, agencies and beyond.
-How happy I am, as Music Director of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra, to be closing WSO's season-long cultural retrospective of conflict resolution with this exciting collaboration with Temple Emanu-El,” remarked Maestro David Wroe. -I am also thrilled and honored to celebrate the immeasurable contribution the Jewish people have made to the classical music world,” he continued.
This once in a lifetime event – the first in the area—will feature renowned Israeli pianist Alon Goldstein, fresh from his collaboration with Israel Philharmonic, performing Schuman’s much loved piano concerto in A minor. The evening will also feature Temple Emanu-El Cantor Martha T. Novick and Bergen County’s Pro Arte Chorale performing Leonard Berstein’s Chichester Psalms in Hebrew.
The celebration will also feature the world premier of a newly commissioned work by the prominent composer and saxophonist Rabbi Greg Wall celebrating the State of Israel through a musical retrospective of Israeli music ranging from pre state early songs to folk melodies, nationalistic tunes through to the mature sounds of the nineties and turn of the 21st century. Scored for full orchestra with folk ensmble, clarinet soloist and male vocalist, this exciting work will be revealed at the May 8th.concert. Rabbi Wall and his ensemble will round off the evening's festivities with a rousing performance of traditional Klezmer and favorite Jewish folk songs.
